Online Deaf Awareness + BSL

In the UK one in five people have some degree of hearing loss. This means that you are likely to come into daily contact with people who are deaf or deafblind.

Our online deaf awareness + BSL course is aimed at organisations and individuals who want to gain an understanding of deaf awareness, gain life skills to improve their communication and improve their organisation’s accessibility and learn some basic BSL. 

Within this course you will learn:

• Ways to identify if someone is deaf

• Terms used to describe deafness

• How to communicate effectively with deaf people

• Communication methods

• Technology – communication aids

• Communication professionals and when to use them.

• You’ll learn and become familiar with basic BSL, giving you the knowledge, skills and confidence to have a conversation with a Deaf person

• As well as all, of this, we provide you with BSL resources that you can download and share with friends and family, including further reading about Deaf history and culture, BSL posters and Flashcards, as well as deaf awareness tips.

By the end of the course, you will have a good knowledge of deaf awareness, plus a basic understanding of BSL and be ready to explore British Sign Language further.

This course is provided by Signature, the UK’s leading awarding body for Deaf communication qualifications. It has been created in partnership with The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), who help deaf people and people with hearing loss or tinnitus with practical advice about hearing loss, tinnitus and hearing aids.
